Design – session 1

For today’s class we were asked to bring print out paintings of the artist we selected and play around with different shapes of the painting. I chose James Rosenquist as his work is very abstract and surreal. We were asked to extract different shapes from the different parts of the painting. Using this technique we were supposed to get clothing designs for our final collection.

I started off with tracing a particular part from the print out and flipping it towards the other side and tracing it again to get a design. I was not focused on a particular garment, so I just went on experimenting until I got a few interesting shapes for a dress, a jacket, a skirt and a top. This procedure was really interesting and fun and I was able to get unique ideas for my design. Then we were asked to finish this task as SDS and experiment more with shapes and designs. I plan on improving my speed for tasks like these as I start overthinking and delaying my process.
