Media (new term)session 1 – Magazine analysis
The objective of today’s class was to analyse the content of the magazines we chose and organise our understanding of the activity and resources that go in to creating content in magazines. We were asked to choose two magazines of our choice from two separate lists given to us and were asked to get these magazines to class for the analysis. I decided to choose British Vogue and Dazed. We were shown different elements in a magazine by Suzanne and she explained it to us what each page signifies and she also helped us understand the different elements of each page.
The first task was to analyse any one of the magazines, so I chose British Vogue. We used different post it notes to identify different pages of the magazine. For example, using red colour post it notes for all the advertisements in the magazine. It was a little confusing because it was hard to identify the category of some of the pages in the magazine but Suzanne helped us with our doubts. We used different colours for the editor’s letter page, contributor’s page, trends page, beauty pages, advertisement, advertorials, etc. and it took a while to finish this task. Then we were supposed to make a PPT explaining all these pages one by one. We had to explain what elements were included in the particular magazine page and write a few points about it.
It was a very insightful class and made me understand the different aspects of a magazine better. I usually never looked at a magazine with so much depth but after today’s class I understood that there are certain things we overlook. It was not a very easy going session but I learned a lot.
