Media session 7 – Creating narrative

For today’s class we were shown Tim Walker’s work and given a behind the scene idea of how everything goes on the set. We discussed the responsibilities that a stylist, photographer, etc. have during the whole process. We also watched a fashion film “The muse” by Tim Walker which was very beautiful and inspiring. The editorial shots from the fashion film featuring Kristen McMenamy were beautiful and attracted my attention the most. Then we were briefed about the work which was creating narratives through images and text. We were also shown good examples which helped us get a better idea of what is expected.

I started off by selecting a few cafe shots, glass shots and museum shot that I captured recently because I found the whole vibe very aesthetic. I went on and arranged the pictures in a minimal collage like format, with a beautiful quote beside it. I decided to take advice on my work from Suzanne and got a really helpful feedback. She asked me to keep it more clean, simple and candid using just 2 pictures and minimal text. I followed her advice and came up with some beautiful outcomes. The other page that I made included some film camera effect pictures from a rainy day that I photographed candidly. My placement of the images started to get better as I proceeded and getting time to time feedback on my work really helped me get better. I really enjoyed today’s session because I love capturing random things everyday and today I got to use those images to show my aesthetic. Creating these magazine pages was really fun and I was really invested in this.

However there are certain things I want to improve. First thing I would like to stop doing is over thinking. Over thinking really slows down my work speed and makes me feel really confused. From now on I would start with the simplest of ideas and gradually try a little complicated ones. I would definitely stick to my minimal aesthetic and not use too many of any element.
